Ahmedabad: The undergraduate (UG) admission process conducted through Gujarat Common Admission Services (GCAS) has been completed, leaving around 1 lakh seats vacant across universities in the state. At Gujarat University alone, approximately 54,000 students have been allotted admission, while more than 10,000 UG seats remain vacant.
This year, the state continued to conduct UG admissions through GCAS platform. Initially, the process was planned to be transferred to individual universities after three rounds following protests by student organisations. However, four rounds were conducted through GCAS, followed by another four rounds after the admission process was handed over to the universities, taking the total to eight rounds.
Students were given opportunities to seek admission in each round, including newly registered candidates. The completion of all eight rounds has now been announced.
According to statistical information available on GCAS website, universities across Gujarat have around 5.50 lakh UG seats in total. Of these, nearly 1 lakh seats have reportedly remained vacant even after completion of the admission process.
At Gujarat University, more than 10,000 seats are currently vacant. University sources said the arts stream has recorded the highest number of admissions, while science colleges have witnessed the lowest admissions. Around 10,000 seats are still vacant in commerce colleges.
The number of vacant seats could increase further due to the ongoing issue involving St Xavier’s College. If the dispute is resolved and a fresh admission round is conducted, students who have already secured admission elsewhere may cancel their existing admissions and seek seats at St Xavier’s.
Sources said the science stream could see a further rise in vacant seats as many students currently admitted are expected to withdraw once medical and paramedical admission processes progress. This may result in additional vacancies in science colleges in the coming weeks.
