AHMEDABAD: The Indian Army has rescued more than 790 people from flood-hit areas of south Gujarat, Ahmedabad and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli after launching relief operations in the wake of heavy rainfall.South Gujarat received incessant rainfall on July 21 and 22, with showers continuing across several parts of the state over the following days.Gujarat has reported 35 rain-related deaths over the past few days, including 29 in the worst-affected districts of Valsad and Navsari, news agency PTI reported.The Southern Command of the Indian Army launched humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations on the evening of July 23.

Over the past three days, Army personnel worked in coordination with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), State Emergency Operations Centre, civil administration and other agencies to provide relief to affected communities, according to a defence release.“The Army deployed multiple relief and rescue columns across Navsari, Valsad, Vapi, Silvassa and flood-affected areas of Ahmedabad, including Dholka and Rajoda, while additional columns remained on standby to respond to emerging contingencies,” the release said.During the operations, troops carried out rescue missions in inundated and inaccessible areas, safely evacuating more than 790 stranded civilians, it said.“Medical teams provided immediate healthcare to those in need, while relief teams distributed food, drinking water and other essential supplies to affected residents. Army personnel also assisted the civil administration in restoring normalcy in the affected areas,” the release added.(With agency inputs)
