YAMUNANAGAR: An Indian Army soldier went missing in the Yamuna river during a training and mock drill exercise at Hathnikund barrage in Yamunanagar district on Tuesday after an army motorboat developed a technical fault.Initially, four soldiers were swept away by the strong current. Three managed to swim to safety, while the fourth remained missing. The army and district administration immediately launched a search operation, which was still underway at the time of filing this report.The identity of the missing soldier has not yet been established, as officials did not disclose further details.Soon after the incident was reported, a police team from Pratap Nagar police station reached the spot and joined the army in the search operation. After a prolonged effort, the submerged motorboat was recovered from the river.The army has not yet issued an official statement on the incident.According to information available, army personnel had reached Hathnikund barrage for a training exercise. The motorboat was deployed in the upstream area of the barrage when it reportedly developed a technical fault and began sinking.The four soldiers aboard the boat were wearing life jackets and jumped into the water after the boat began sinking. They were swept towards the Western Yamuna Canal by the strong current. Three managed to swim to safety, while one soldier went missing.“On our request, the authorities of the Irrigation and Water Resources department have reduced the flow of water in Western Yamuna Canal from the Hathnikund barrage. We have also requested the district administration to send a team of NDRF to carry out the search operation,” a police officer said.
