Gurgaon: Police in Faridabad and Nuh have arrested 787 accused in a crackdown on criminals and drug traffickers over nearly two weeks, with teams recovering illegal firearms, ammunition, narcotics and banned medicines. The arrests were part of a special drive, Operation Trackdown, launched by Haryana Police to target wanted and habitual offenders as well as those involved in serious crimes ahead of Independence Day.A total of 4,771 accused were arrested in the operation across the state. Teams from Faridabad arrested 597 accused between Aug 1 and 15, while Nuh Police arrested 190 people between Aug 3 and 15.In Faridabad, police have arrested three accused in murder cases, 10 in attempted murder cases, eight in extortion cases, four in robbery cases, one in a dacoity case and eight in snatching cases. Another 81 people were arrested under the Arms Act and 47 under the NDPS Act.The arms haul included 60 country-made firearms, 11 country-made pistols, 40 cartridges and four magazines. Police also seized 56 grams of smack, 14 kg of cannabis, 6,451 banned tablets, 382 capsules, 386 injections and about 15 grams of MDMA. History sheets of 16 habitual criminals were also opened.In Nuh, police have registered 25 cases involving serious offences, including murder, attempt to murder, extortion, robbery, dacoity, snatching, kidnapping and Arms Act violations, besides 123 other cases. Of the 190 arrested, 90 were accused in serious crimes and 100 in other cases.Nuh Police has recovered six illegal country-made pistols, seven cartridges, 152 grams of heroin, 54 grams of ganja, 608 bottles of prohibited liquor, 1,944 banned capsules and 195 prohibited injections during the drive.“Among the major arrests in Faridabad, Crime Branch Sector 56 arrested Naeem, a Nuh resident who had been absconding for three years and carried a reward of Rs 5,000. Three cases were already registered against him,” a police officer said.Crime Branch Sector 16 has arrested Vikas alias Vicky of Nacholi village, also carrying a Rs 5,000 reward. Police have recovered a country-made pistol and two live rounds from him. He has 10 previous criminal cases against him, it added.Crime Branch Sector 30 has arrested Basant, Akash and Yogesh for allegedly possessing illegal firearms. Police have recovered two country-made pistols, a country-made firearm, four magazines and 30 cartridges from them. Police said the three men were allegedly planning a major crime, which was prevented by the timely intervention of the team.Faridabad police commissioner Satender Kumar Gupta said, “The operation was aimed at identifying and apprehending wanted and active criminals and curbing the supply of illegal weapons and narcotics.”Nuh Police, in a statement, also said similar drives would continue to strengthen surveillance over criminals and prevent drug-related offences.
