Thiruvananthapuram: A crucial infrastructure project aimed at easing connectivity woes in the outskirts of the state capital has hit an unexpected hurdle, with a post-construction soil strength assessment forcing a redesign of Vellayani Lake bridge. The soil test ruled out the feasibility of the originally planned approach road to the bridge. The development has left the nearly completed structure unusable for now, officials said.According to sources in the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB), the bridge construction is complete but cannot be opened to the public. Authorities have now proposed extending the bridge by adding new spans instead of proceeding with the initial plan. Officials from Kerala Road Fund Board (KRFB) said the revised design includes an extension of 39m towards College of Agriculture and 15m towards Kakkamoola. The modification will require additional spans and limited land acquisition, though progress on these fronts is yet to begin. The redesign has also triggered a fresh funding requirement. A KIIFB source said the revised proposal, including additional costs for the redesigned approach road component, will need approval from the board’s committee. However, the process has been delayed due to the enforcement of the election code of conduct, which has temporarily stalled administrative decisions. “The proposal can be taken up only after the election code of conduct is lifted and only then the KIIFB committee can convene,” the source noted, adding that delays could potentially impact the contractor’s continuation on the project. The bridge project, sanctioned in 2017, began construction only last year under KRFB supervision, with an estimated cost of Rs 34 crore. It was envisioned as a long-term solution to recurring flooding issues that disrupt connectivity in the region. Residents of Poonkulam, Kakkamoola and Vellayani have long demanded the bridge, as the existing bund road frequently submerges during heavy rains, cutting off access to schools, hospitals, and public transport. With the monsoon approaching, there are growing concerns that the project may fail to serve its intended purpose this year as well. Despite the bridge being ready, the delay in completing the approach infrastructure means residents may continue to face disruptions. Local MLA M Vincent said the revised plan for the approach road has already been finalised and would soon be submitted to KIIFB for approval. He expressed optimism that work would resume shortly after the necessary clearances are obtained.
