Mumbai: Nationalist Congress Party (SP) working president Supriya Sule said on Wednesday that her party would “consider” supporting the proposed delimitation bill only if the Centre explicitly guaranteed a uniform 50% increase in the number of seats in all states.

The other condition for the NCP(SP) to consider the bill is the methodology to determine the drawing up of parliamentary constituencies, she said at a press conference in Mumbai. “No state should face injustice; there should be a 50% cap for the increase. If it is in people’s interest, then we are ready to discuss it in the INDIA bloc,” said Sule.

She held the press conference to scotch reports that her party had decided to align with the NDA and dropped its opposition to the delimitation bill. The issue for the Opposition is not just about the uniform increase in seats for all states but also how the delimitation exercise will have to be carried out, the Baramati MP said. “We should know the process and formula to be followed for delimitation. In Assam, for instance, we saw how they arbitrarily cut the constituency of Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi. The delimitation of constituencies should not happen as per the whims of one party. We have concerns about the formula to be followed,” Sule said. She clarified her party’s stand after senior NCP(SP) leader Jayant Patil met Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis Tuesday night. There were reports that Patil met Fadnavis along with senior NCP (Ajit) leaders Praful Patel and Sunil Tatkare.

Referring to the meeting, the NCP(SP) leader said her party continued to remain in the Opposition alliance. “Jayant Patil had taken a prior appointment with the CM and met him as an NCP(SP) municipal council president was disqualified without following the due process. It was not a secret meeting; Patil did not hide and go. Every time someone meets someone it does not need to be a political controversy,” said Sule.
