COIMBATORE: Coimbatore district police arrested 14 people and seized 7.7kg of ganja, methamphetamine and other contraband during a raid at 228 locations in Karumathampatty and Perur subdivisions on Sunday.According to police, around 480 police personnel, organised into 72 special teams, took part in the early-morning operation targeting suspected drug peddlers, repeat offenders and people wanted in previous cases.The raids were conducted in the limits of Kovilpalayam and Chettipalayam police stations under Karumathampatty subdivision, and Madukkarai and KG Chavadi police stations under Perur subdivision. Police searched 132 locations in Karumathampatty subdivision and 96 in Perur subdivision.The operation was conducted as part of efforts to curb the sale, possession, storage and transportation of narcotics and banned tobacco products.During the operation, police registered 10 cases related to ganja and banned tobacco products and arrested 12 suspects. Two other people who had been absconding in earlier cases were also arrested, taking the total number of arrests to 14.The seizures included 7.702kg of ganja, 2 gram of methamphetamine, 1,000 prescription tablets and 45 kg of banned tobacco products. Police seized five mobile phones, 16 two-wheelers, two sickles and ₹15,000 in cash.Police are also investigating possible links to wider drug distribution networks and the involvement of others.
