Burdwan: Three villages in East Burdwan have put up banners and flexes barring all political parties and their workers from entering until voters whose names were deleted under the SIR process are restored to the electoral roll. The villages — Naupara in the Purbasthali South assembly constituency, and Baharampur and Hijalna in the Raina constituency — have also demanded that the voter list be corrected with accurate names and details. In Naupara, the deletions have been particularly severe. Of over 900 voters registered at booth no. 227, 141 received notices, 138 names were deleted and only three were added.“My name has been deleted, along with those of other relatives,” said Sabir Sk, a local. Villagers in Baharampur and Hijalna could not be reached for comment, and local political leaders declined to speak.East Burdwan DM Sweta Agarwal said she would “look into the matter.”A protest meeting called by the Monteshwar Block Votadhikar Raksha Mancha at Kusumgram Bus Stand on Sunday was cancelled after police denied permission. The platform has described the ongoing SIR process as a “farce” and demanded fair electoral rights. “We had to call off the protest as police did not grant the necessary permission,” said Mahibul Sheikh, speaking on behalf of the Mancha.
