Pune: The long-pending Andra closed water pipeline project has moved a step closer to implementation after the state irrigation department allowed Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to start the tendering process for use of land around the dam.The project was stalled for more than a year over the transfer of 0.955 hectares of irrigation department land required for laying the pipeline and building infrastructure like a jackwell, approach channel, pump house, approach bridge and electricity substation.While the proposal to permanently transfer the land to the civic body is awaiting final approval from the higher authorities, the department has permitted the civic body to begin the tendering process to avoid further delays.The 8km pipeline project aims to supply water directly from the dam to the PCMC’s water treatment plant in Chikhali through a closed pipeline, reducing contamination during transmission. The civic body currently lifts 100 MLD water from Nighoje Bund and the dam will be another water source for PCMC after Pavana.Last year, the irrigation department agreed to lease the land to PCMC for 30 years. However, the civic body sought permanent transfer instead. In a letter to the irrigation department last month, PCMC said the delay was holding up the project as it was unable to initiate the tendering process.A senior PCMC official said the civic body will pay Rs 2.22 crore to the irrigation department for the permanent transfer of the land. “The proposal is awaiting approval from the irrigation department’s committee. We have been allowed to initiate the tender process so that preliminary formalities are completed. Once the land transfer is formally approved, the work order for the project can be issued without delay,” he added.Joint city engineer Ajay Suryawanshi told TOI, “The project is crucial for the city’s future water supply, given the rapidly growing population and limited water allocation. Transporting water through a closed pipeline will minimise contamination during transmission and cleaner water will reach the treatment plant. Besides, water otherwise lost in evaporation can be saved.”
