Jamshedpur: West Singhbhum civil surgeon Dr. Jujhar Majhi has constituted a three-member committee to probe a case of alleged negligence in blood transfusion at Chaibasa Sadar Hospital.Surendra Boypai, 48, a resident of Khutpani block in the district, was admitted to the hospital with severe anaemia on June 11. During his treatment, doctors advised that Boypai needed six units of blood.Subsequently, a test was carried out at the blood bank of the hospital, and he was provided a unit of AB+ blood group, which was later transfused. On June 16, however, when Boypai underwent another blood group test, it emerged that his blood group was O+.“The second unit of AB+ blood was not administered, and the matter was immediately reported to the hospital administration,” a source said.Majhi said a three-member medical team to conduct investigation has been set up on Thursday. The team comprise deputy superintendent of the hospital, a physician and a pathologist.“Only after the inquiry report is submitted will it be clear where the error occurred and who is responsible. The investigation will determine how an incorrect blood group allegedly was made available to the patient, and at what level the lapse occurred,” Majhi said.“Normally, a patient dies within 48 hours of wrong blood transfusion. In this case, however, the patient is still alive,” Majhi said.“The possibility of conspiracy to discredit the hospital can also be not ruled out, even our own staff could be part of the plan. The probe report is expected in a day or two,” he said. The incident has once again raised questions over the functioning of the blood bank at the hospital. In October last year, five thalassemia children contracted HIV due to botched up blood transfusion. Jharkhand high court took cognisance of the incident, and a series of measures were undertaken by the state govt.
