Nagpur: Vidarbha continued to reel under an intense heat spell on Friday, with Amravati recording the highest maximum temperature in the country for the second consecutive day. The city touched 41.8°C, making it not only the hottest place in India but also the 13th hottest location in the world, according to weather data. At least six places in Vidarbha crossed the 40°C mark, placing them among the top 10 hottest locations in the country. These include Amravati (41.8°C), Akola (41.5°C), Wardha (40.6°C), Yavatmal (40.4°C), Washim (40.5°C) and the sub-district station Bramhapuri (41.4°C).Even Nagpur recorded a maximum temperature of 39.4°C, remaining close to the 40°C mark as the region experienced persistently high temperatures for the past several days. Meteorologists indicated that Vidarbha is currently witnessing a heatwave-like spell, though some relief may be on the horizon. Weather models suggest rain, gusty winds and thunderstorms over the weekend, which could temporarily break the ongoing heat spell across parts of the region.Citizens said the current dry conditions and intense afternoon heat are leading to dehydration, fatigue and uneasiness, forcing many people to stay indoors during peak hours. Those who have to step out for work said the sharp variations between hot afternoons and relatively cooler indoor environments are making them feel unwell. Doctors also reported a rise in seasonal infections. Paediatric pulmonologist Dr Vivek Charde said the sudden temperature fluctuations triggered an increase in gastrointestinal infections among children, including vomiting and diarrhoea. “Some sporadic cases of chickenpox were also reported. The rising temperature increased the viral load, leading to respiratory distress among children. Asthmatic kids who do not strictly follow inhaler protocols are facing greater discomfort,” he said. Dr Charde added that patients from rural areas and nearby districts, including Amravati, are being referred to Nagpur for clinical management. With rainfall expected over the weekend, he cautioned that viral infections could see a further spike in the coming days.
