Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is set to prepare a 30-year master plan (up to 2057) for the city’s drainage and stormwater network. It proposed appointing IIT Gandhinagar for the exercise at a cost of Rs 8 crore. The proposal will be placed before the standing committee for approval at its meeting on Wednesday.According to the proposal, IIT Gandhinagar will assess the existing sewerage and stormwater network using AMC records, develop a GIS-based integrated database, forecast population growth, wastewater generation and runoff, and evaluate network capacity through hydraulic modelling. The institute will also identify flooding hotspots and capacity gaps, prepare phased augmentation and investment plans, recommend climate-resilient infrastructure, and prioritise projects along with quality assurance measures. The proposal follows AMC’s earlier decision to entrust IIT Gandhinagar with project of developing a Rs 5.7 crore Citywide Urban Flood Monitoring and Decision Support Platform. The system, to be completed in three years, aims to predict waterlogging hotspots before rainfall and assess the impact of new roads and development projects on flooding. In May 2025, AMC had appointed IIT Gandhinagar to conduct surveys and prepare a detailed project report on urban flood prevention for Rs 12 lakh. Those surveys are currently underway and will feed into the larger planning exercise.
