Ahmedabad: The ongoing renovation of eight crematoriums across the city came under scrutiny during the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) standing committee meeting on Wednesday, with the panel chairman seeking explanations from contractors and consultants over delays in completing the works.The renovation works, including the facility at Hatkeshwar, were reviewed during the meeting. Standing committee chairman Kamlesh Patel said Hatkeshwar project faced an unexpected obstruction after water was encountered at a depth of 10 feet during construction.“Considering the situation that arose during execution, necessary changes were made to the drawings and designs, resulting in an extension of the project timeline,” Patel said.He added that modifications were made to design after taking into account geographical conditions of Hatkeshwar area. However, such conditions should have been identified during the soil testing stage itself, he said.“This issue was deliberated in the committee; the respective work was reviewed, and directives have been issued to execute work in a well-planned manner by factoring in such aspects in the future,” Patel said.Renovation work was currently under way at all eight crematoriums. The civic body was also focusing on measures to address pollution-related concerns, besides improving facilities for citizens and ensuring smoother movement within the premises.Patel said that barring two of the eight crematoriums, explanations were sought from the respective contractors and consultants wherever the pace of work had not met expectations.
