Mangaluru: Alva’s Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre (Alva’s Medical College) will be inaugurated at the Smt Shobha Mohan Alva campus in Mijar on Monday. Alva’s Education Foundation chairman Dr M Mohan Alva said the institution has met all National Medical Commission requirements and offers infrastructure that exceeds prescribed standards in several areas.The campus has spacious classrooms, modern facilities, an auditorium and a library that will be open round the clock. The foundation also plans to establish a separate 650-bed hospital at Mijar.Alva’s Health Centre, founded in 1986 to provide affordable healthcare, has grown into a 650-bed multispecialty hospital, catering to 800 to 1,000 outpatients daily. The hospital provides extensive clinical exposure for medical students and houses a dedicated cardiac centre with a catheterisation laboratory. Eligible BPL cardholders can avail free angioplasty under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. The foundation plans further expansion of its healthcare facilities.For the 2026-27 academic year, the college has received approval for 150 MBBS seats, including 54 seats reserved for Tulu-speaking minority students.Under the Karnataka govt’s public-private partnership model, Alva’s Health Centre manages the Moodubidire Community Health Centre and primary health centres at Beluvai and Shaktinagar.Alva’s Punarnirman Centre has been upgraded into a 50-bed mental health hospital, with plans for a 200-bed facility in the future. Other proposed facilities include specialised geriatric care, separate dialysis and ophthalmology units, and a palliative care centre.Several departments and treatment centres have been named after eminent doctors, including TMA Pai, Dr S Kantha, Dr Shankar Nayak, Dr VS Acharya, Dr Shantharam Shetty and others. The inauguration will be held in the presence of Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari D Veerendra Heggade. Chief minister DK Shivakumar, Union minister Pralhad Joshi, minister UT Khader and other dignitaries are expected to attend.
