Gurgaon: GMDA is exploring alternative alignments to bridge seven missing links in the sewerage network of sectors 81 to 87, with the gaps collectively stretching around 1.6km. The sewerage network was taken over from HSVP in July but remains non-functional because of the missing stretches.The move follows a site inspection on Monday by Haryana’s principal adviser for urban development DS Dhesi. He directed officials to explore alternative alignments at locations where work has stalled due to court cases and land acquisition issues.“Major sector roads should not be planned in isolation from underground civic utilities,” Dhesi said, adding that coordinated efforts would help avoid repeated excavation of newly developed roads and minimise inconvenience to residents.HSVP had laid around 25km of sewerage line in sectors 81 to 87 before handing over the network to GMDA in July. The missing links include a stretch of nearly 170 metres between sectors 87-91 and 84-88, around 100 metres between sectors 81-86 and 83-84, and another 30-metre stretch in the sector 85-86 area.“There are seven missing links in this portion, with a total length of around 1.6km. Some locations have court cases, while others face land acquisition issues. Because of these gaps, the entire system is currently not functional,” a GMDA official said.The absence of a functional sewerage network has left several housing societies dependent on temporary arrangements for sewage disposal. Some hire private tankers to transport sewage, while untreated wastewater has also been discharged into open drains and vacant plots.GMDA is now examining whether the affected stretches can be bypassed or the alignment changed. Options include laying the sewer line through central verges, crossing roads at suitable locations and bypassing stretches where laying the line is currently difficult.GMDA will prepare an estimate for the proposed alternative works within one to two months. HSVP will continue to pursue the court cases concerning the affected properties, while GMDA will examine engineering solutions that can be implemented independently of those disputes.Once the missing links are completed, sewage from the sectors can flow through the network to the proposed treatment facility in Sector 107. GMDA has already started the process to set up the facility, with bids scheduled to be opened at the end of Sept.GMDA is also taking over sewerage infrastructure in the new sectors in phases. The network in sectors 88 to 103 remains with HSVP, while GMDA is laying the network in sectors 104 to 115. Around 20km of sewerage line is planned in sectors 104 to 115, of which about 8km has been laid.“Before taking over the remaining sewer network laid by HSVP, it would also be studied so that existing gaps and other difficulties can be identified and addressed in phases, instead of taking over incomplete or disconnected networks at once,” the official said.The govt last week also approved a Rs 19-crore project to build the sewerage network in sectors 77 to 80. The project is expected to take two years. Work in sectors 68 to 76 is also underway and is targeted for completion by June 2027.
