Thane: An alert group of commuters helped nab a 25-year-old man who was found travelling in a suburban local allegedly carrying a sharp weapon. The youth was subsequently arrested after fellow passengers spotted him and raised an alarm, leading the police to nab him before ehe could escape, officials informed Saturday.According to the police, the accused was travelling in the general coach of a Kalyan-bound slow local Friday afternoon when a few passengers spotted him carrying the weapon in his bag and after the train halted at Mumbra platform 1 around 1:30 pm, they signalled an on-duty police staffer, alerting him about the man carrying the weapon.“The accused, Shubham Bhalerao, 25, was intercepted but he gave evasive replies and on frisking, our team recovered a 32-cm stainless steel knife, with a 19-cm blade, wrapped in plastic on his person.

The police said further investigations are underway. This is the second incident in the last two weeks where a commuter was spotted and arrested for carrying sharp weapons on the railway station premises. The incident comes close on the heels of the appeal made by the railway police discouraging passengers from carrying sharp weapons or those that can harm fellow passengers after the Western Railway incident where a commuter was brutally stabbed in the first week of July over a trivial reason.
