He is bound for Hajj pilgrimage. The assembly session will start on May 21. Ajmal has won elections from Binnakandi seat in the recently held assembly polls. In the 2024 Lok Sabha polls Ajmal lost from the Dhubri seat.
Ajmal told media persons that initially the assembly session was scheduled to start on May 18 but was later shifted to May 21, the same day he is set to leave for Hajj.
He said, ” The first session was scheduled for May 18, but the Chief Minister later announced that it will be held on May 21. I have Hajj on that day. I have written to the Speaker. My swearing-in will be done as per the convenience of the Speaker. These days it’s very difficult to make a Hajj pilgrimage and I do not want to miss the opportunity.”
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma 2.0 in its first cabinet meeting on May 13 had decided to table the Uniform Civil Code (UCC)on May 26 in the state assembly.
Ajmal said AIUDF will oppose the UCC bill. Sarma had said the Cabinet had approved the draft UCC and decided to table the proposed legislation on the final day of the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly session on May 26.
The Cabinet had approved the draft of the Uniform Civil Code and decided to present it on the last day of the Assembly session. Drawing comparisons with other BJP-ruled states, the Chief Minister noted that Uttarakhand, Goa and Gujarat had already moved ahead with UCC implementation, while Assam has now formally approved its own version. He explained the proposed UCC in Assam would be limited to fixing a uniform minimum age for marriage, abolition of polygamy, inheritance rights for women, and regulation of live-in relationships, including compulsory registration of marriages and divorces.
He had said, “The UCC will be implemented without any interference in religious affairs and practices. Exemption will be provided to tribals both in the hills and plans.”
He added “We have also kept all the religious rituals, traditions and customs practised by the people of Assam outside the scope of the UCC.”
