Competition concerns in digital markets are growing as the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) continues to surge, Competition Commission of India (CCI) Chairperson Ravneet Kaur said on Monday.

She was speaking at a national training programme-cum-workshop for law students at IIULER in Goa.

She also highlighted the rapid adoption of AI across sectors, noting its benefits in areas such as education, healthcare, logistics and supply-chain management.

However, Kaur cautioned that AI could also facilitate anti-competitive practices, including self-preferencing, tying and bundling, discriminatory pricing and automated matching of competitors’ prices.

She said AI is accelerating the evolution of digital markets, requiring regulators to assess whether the technology could replicate or amplify competition concerns seen in the past.

Kaur also flagged potential risks from agentic AI systems that can operate with limited or no human intervention, including tools capable of monitoring competitors’ prices and automatically matching or undercutting them.

“The algorithms are made in such a way that it is something happening on its own,” she said.

She added that the CCI prefers not to intervene immediately whenever a new technology emerges. Instead, the regulator uses market studies to better understand evolving risks and market dynamics, particularly as India’s startup ecosystem continues to expand.
