Dumka: AIIMS Deoghar has successfully performed its first-ever awake craniotomy for the removal of a brain tumour, marking a major milestone in the institute’s neurosurgical services, it said in a statement on Tuesday.An awake craniotomy is a specialised brain surgery in which the patient remains conscious during crucial stages of the procedure. It is primarily used for tumours located near brain regions that control speech, language, movement and other vital neurological functions.Dr Chandrima Biswas of the department of neurosurgery said, “The technique enables surgeons to assess neurological functions in real time during tumour removal, helping achieve maximum safe resection while preserving critical areas of the brain.”The procedure was carried out with intraoperative neuromonitoring, which uses controlled electrical stimulation to map and identify functionally important brain regions, allowing surgeons to distinguish between areas that can be safely operated on and those that must be preserved.Dr Saurav Kumar, junior resident in the department said the surgery required close coordination between the neurosurgery and anaesthesia teams, with continuous neurological assessment throughout the operation.The surgery was performed by the department of neurosurgery, led by Dr Chandrima and Dr Saurav, in collaboration with the department of anaesthesiology headed by Dr Sanjay Kumar, along with Dr Neha Bharti, Dr Girish and other medical staff.Dr Sanjay said, “Precise anaesthetic planning and continuous monitoring were essential to keep the patient comfortable, stable and responsive during the procedure.”According to doctors, the patient is recovering well and has shown no neurological deficits following the surgery. AIIMS Deoghar said the achievement would strengthen its capacity to provide advanced neurosurgical care to patients from Jharkhand and neighbouring states.
