Chennai: The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) faced another setback on Tuesday when former minister and Ambasamudram MLA Esakki Subaya met assembly Speaker JCD Prabhakar at the Secretariat and resigned from his MLA post.

His resignation comes a day after AIADMK legislators Maragatham Kumaravel, P Sathyabama and S Jayakumar resigned from the assembly and later joined the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by chief minister C Joseph Vijay.

With Subaya’s exit, the total number of resignations from the AIADMK camp has risen to four in two days, reducing the party’s strength in the 234-member Tamil Nadu assembly to 43 MLAs.

As per reports, there are 27 AIADMK MLAs currently backing party general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, while 16 legislators are aligned with senior leaders SP Velumani and CV Shanmugam. Subaya also belongs to the rebel camp and had voted in favour of the TVK government during the May 13 confidence motion. He too is expected to join the ruling party.

The Palaniswami faction of the AIADMK urged the Speaker not to accept the resignation of the three party MLAs on Tuesday, saying they joined the ruling TVK even before their resignations were notified.

AIADMK party whip SS Krishnamoorthy stressed that while their previous plea seeking the disqualification of the 25 MLAs who defied party diktat and voted in favour of the TVK-led government in the May 13 floor test was pending before the Speaker, he could not accept the resignation of the leaders.
