Panaji: The transport department on Saturday began enforcing traffic violations detected by AI-based traffic cameras installed at 26 locations across the state. Director of transport Arvind Khutkar said traffic violations have reduced by 80% over the past two months.The enforcement drive began a month later than originally planned following public outcry over the implementation.Khutkar said the AI cameras will detect violations such as driving without a seat belt, overspeeding, dangerous driving, using a mobile phone while driving, riding two-wheelers without helmets, driving uninsured vehicles, and using modified vehicles.He said motorists indulging in rash driving, including overtaking from the left, will also be penalised.The department’s analysis indicates an 80% decline in traffic violations since the cameras were installed. “Most of the people have started compliance,” Khutkar said.He added that a large number of violations involve vehicles registered outside Goa, particularly those belonging to tourists unfamiliar with traffic rules in the state.Meanwhile, accidents rose by 10.7% in June 2026 compared with the corresponding period last year, according to Goa police’s traffic cell.A senior police officer said, “93.9% of accidents occurred due to rash and negligent driving.”“In June 2026, a total of 1,324 accidents were reported in Goa, as against 1,196 cases reported during the corresponding period of 2025. There is an increase in accidents by 128 (10.7%) cases. The fatalities increased by one (0.7%), that is, 141 during the last year to 142 during the current year,” the traffic cell said.The officer said national highways accounted for 40.8% of accidents. Straight roads accounted for 78.6% of accidents, followed by curved roads at 12.6%.
