Mysuru: The Consortium for Educational Communication (CEC) director, Parikshat Singh Manhas, on Monday said that using AI tools effectively depends on giving the right prompt, and framing the right question requires wisdom. Universities and teachers have a responsibility to preserve that wisdom and guide students in the right direction, he said.Delivering a lecture on ‘The University of Mysore in the Age of Artificial Intelligence (AI): Building the Future with Human Wisdom’, organised as part of the 110th Foundation Day of the University of Mysore at Crawford Hall, Manhas said that with AI rapidly saturating the information space and automating repetitive cognitive work, universities must remain the crucible for wisdom.He said: “AI can support human curiosity, but cannot replace it, and universities should value insightful questions as much as correct answers. Tomorrow’s graduates will be defined not by the facts they possess but by the wisdom with which they apply knowledge.” Students must learn not only how to use AI, but also when not to use it, he added.He noted that people are overloaded with information and that it must be proper, appropriate and reliable. Teachers, he said, should help students engage with information and understand what is right. Drawing parallels with earlier technological anxieties such as the computer panic in the 80s and the Y2K bug, Manhas said humans must always be prepared for unforeseen circumstances, adding a similar moment has now arrived with AI.University of Mysore VC NK Lokanath said AI will not replace teachers, but effective teachers — and students who use AI wisely — will take the lead and outperform those who don’t use AI. “Instead of fear, it is essential to adapt to this change and build new skills. My message to students is to use AI not only for assignments, but to strengthen creative and critical thinking, and to find solutions to challenges,” he said.University registrar Nagaraja was present.
