Ahmedabad: The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the customs department on Feb 19 apprehended a passenger arriving from Abu Dhabi for allegedly smuggling 37.18 grams of gold, valued at about Rs 5.01 lakh, by ingesting it. According to a department release, the passenger admitted to concealing metallic contraband inside his body by swallowing it. He was admitted to the Civil Hospital, where an X-ray and other tests were conducted. During stool passage, doctors recovered three unshaped gold bars. A medical report dated Feb 24 confirmed the concealment, and a valuer certified the recovered metal as gold. Customs officials said the gold was seized under the Customs Act, 1962, for being brought into India without declaration.
