Ahmedabad: A 37-year-old man was chased and hacked to death by a group of armed assailants near the Ranip police chowky in the early hours of Saturday, raising concerns over police vigilance despite directives for officers to remain on night patrol. The murder took place in a public area near Subhash Bridge Circle where tensions linked to an earlier dispute had reportedly been escalating.The victim, Ranchhod Salvi, sustained multiple injuries after being attacked with swords, machetes and knives, according to a complaint filed by his relative, Bharat Salvi. He was rushed to hospitals for treatment but was later declared dead by doctors.According to the complaint lodged with Ranip police, the dispute began around 10 to 12 days ago when one of the accused, Bhadresh Sharma, allegedly abused youths in his locality. Ranchhod intervened and allegedly slapped him. Subsequently, Bhadresh’s brother-in-law, Sagar Sharma, allegedly called Ranchhod and threatened to have him killed.The complaint further states that a few days later, another relative of Ranchhod was allegedly assaulted near Subhash Bridge by Ankit Parmar and Parth Parmar. When Ranchhod questioned them about the assault, Ankit allegedly threatened him on the phone.On Saturday night, Bharat and Ranchhod were near Subhash Bridge Circle after attending to a family matter. According to the complaint, a man known as Gotli called Ranchhod and warned him that he would be killed. The two later returned towards the circle.At around 2am to 2.30am, a pickup van allegedly arrived from the direction of a tea stall. The complaint names Vishal Parshottam Chauhan as one of the men who got out of the vehicle along with five to seven others, all allegedly armed with deadly weapons.Sensing danger, Ranchhod reportedly asked Bharat to run. While Bharat managed to escape, Ranchhod was caught by the attackers. The complaint alleges that the group repeatedly assaulted him with swords, machetes, and knives before fleeing the spot.Ranchhod was initially taken to a nearby hospital and later shifted to a private hospital, where he was declared dead.
