Ahmedabad: A sessions court on Monday sentenced four members of a family to three years in prison for attempting to kill their daughter-in-law by giving her poison by force, subjecting her to domestic violence, and demanding dowry.According to the prosecution’s case, the woman married a resident of Nana Chiloda in 2007. The couple had a daughter in 2010. In Nov 2012, her father filed an FIR at Sardarnagar police station against her husband, father-in-law, mother-in-law, and sister-in-law when she was hospitalised after the poisoning incident. After investigation, police charged the four with cruelty, demanding dowry and attempt to murder. The couple separated in 2017 and the man remarried in 2018.During the trial, additional public prosecutor Ajay Trivedi examined 18 witnesses and presented documentary evidence to establish the guilt of all four accused. While sentencing the accused, the court stated, “Considering the seriousness of the situation and the circumstances of the case, it is not deemed appropriate to release the accused on probation. However, taking into account the financial records and the evidence presented by the complainant, it is noted that during the marriage, the accused demanded Rs 3 lakh in cash from the victim. Unable to fulfil this demand, the accused conspired together, subjected the victim to cruelty, and with the intention of causing harm or potentially leading to the victim’s death, administered a poisonous substance. As a result, the victim and her daughter had to undergo prolonged treatment at the civil hospital.”
