Ahmedabad: A police constable has been booked for abetment of suicide following the death of his wife in Vasna. Her family has alleged prolonged physical and mental harassment.According to a complaint filed with the Vasna police station on Thursday, the deceased, Geeta Purohit, 35, allegedly died by suicide on April 15 at her residence in Abhilasha Society near Rajwadu Hotel in Ahmedabad. She is survived by two children, a 10-year-old daughter and a 7-year-old son. The complaint was lodged by her brother, Nathusingh Rajpurohit, a resident of Jodhpur in Rajasthan. He alleged that Geeta’s husband, Arjunsingh Purohit, who has been serving in the police since 2015, was subjecting her to harassment and abuse over several years, leading her to take the extreme step. According to the FIR, the complainant received a call from Arjunsingh on the morning of April 15 stating that Geeta was distressed due to their son’s medical condition and had consumed sleeping pills. Attempts to speak with her later in the day were unsuccessful. By evening, the complainant was informed by a relative that Geeta had died by suicide. Her family rushed to Ahmedabad, where a postmortem examination was conducted at the Civil Hospital before the last rites were performed. The complaint alleges that Geeta previously returned to her parental home following disputes, including an incident in Aug 2023 when she reportedly fled Ahmedabad after an alleged assault. She stayed with her family for several months before returning to her matrimonial home after a community-mediated settlement. The FIR also refers to a prior incident in June 2024 when police were called following a domestic dispute. The complainant claims that Geeta shared a video at the time alleging harassment. Further, a relative of the cop reportedly told the complainant that an argument had occurred between the couple hours before she died. Police have also recovered a handwritten note, believed to be written by the deceased, indicating distress. Based on the complaint, Vasna police have registered a case against Arjunsingh.
