Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad city police are planning to create a new Zone 8 in the eastern part of the city as part of an administrative restructuring to strengthen policing in rapidly growing areas. The move comes after the state govt’s recent reshuffle of IPS officers, in which Mayur Patil was appointed as deputy commissioner of police (DCP) for the proposed zone. Although the zone has not yet been formally notified, officials in the state home department said the appointment indicates that the new policing unit was likely to become operational soon.
Police sources said the proposal has already been submitted to the state home department and is expected to be finalised within the next month.According to the plan, five to six police stations will be brought under Zone 8, which will be carved out from the existing jurisdictions of Zone 5 and Zone 6. Currently, Zone 5 includes Bapunagar, Nikol, Amraiwadi, Rakhial, Gomtipur, Odhav and Ramol police stations, while Zone 6 comprises Maninagar, Isanpur, Kagadapith, Narol, Vatva, Vatva GIDC and Danilimda. As part of the restructuring, a new police station is proposed in Vastral. At present, the Vastral area falls under the Ramol police station jurisdiction. After the reorganisation, it will be separated and brought under the proposed Vastral police station.Officials said the restructuring will also require changes in the territorial jurisdiction of at least three police stations to better manage growing residential areas and industrial zones along the eastern ring road and nearby localities. With the addition of Zone 8, Sector 2 of the Ahmedabad city police will expand to four zones. At present, the sector includes Zones 4, 5 and 6. Police officials said the new zone is expected to improve supervision, response time and overall law and order management in the city’s rapidly developing eastern corridor.
