Ahmedabad: Using a novel modus operandi, bootleggers in the city have begun removing CNG cylinders from autorickshaws and using the vacant space to conceal liquor. The tactic came to light after a crime branch team intercepted a CNG autorickshaw while patrolling on Tuesday night.Acting on a tip-off, the team reached a stretch near Pirana and found a parked autorickshaw matching the description given. The vehicle was cordoned off and the driver detained. During inspection, officers discovered that the vehicle, originally designed to run on CNG, had its gas cylinder removed. In its place and along the chassis, specially crafted hidden compartments had been created. A detailed search led to the recovery of 240 bottles of liquor concealed inside two different secret cavities. Police said the accused modified the vehicle to evade detection, as the absence of a visible load made the rickshaw appear like any regular passenger vehicle. Officers added that by switching to petrol instead of CNG, the accused ensured uninterrupted movement without raising suspicion at fuel stations or during routine checks. The total value of the seized liquor, vehicle, and mobile phone is estimated to be more than Rs 1 lakh. A case has been registered under the Prohibition Act, and probe is under way to identify the supply chain and possible accomplices.
