Guwahati: A 15-year-old male Royal Bengal Tiger rescued near Kaziranga National Park on June 8 has been sent to Assam State Zoo.An IFS officer of Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve said, “A tiger from Kaziranga National Park’s Agoratoli Range strayed into Bamungaon village, located on the outskirts of the range, earlier this month and killed seven cows in a day.”The officer said the tiger triggered panic in Bamungaon for two to three days after repeatedly entering the village and attacking livestock. A joint team of forest officials, wildlife veterinarians and police launched a tracking operation through dense vegetation and agricultural fields before cornering the animal. The tiger was tranquillised and captured, the officer said. “After the tiger was captured, we found that it was an aged tiger and one of its canines was missing, and it had multiple injuries in the hind limb. We could not release the tiger back into the forest. The tiger was then brought to the CWRC at Panbari, where the tiger was provided care by veterinary experts.”The tiger was initially weak but later deemed fit for transportation. “The tiger was weak at the time when it was captured. However, after it recovered, we sent the tiger to Assam State Zoo. As per protocols, we have to send the tiger to a recognised zoo. Accordingly, we have sent the tiger to the Assam State Zoo,” the officer said. The officer said the injuries may have been caused by infighting in the jungle.
