Agartala: Police evacuated Nirmal Debbarma, the BJP candidate for the Jampuijala-Takarjala constituency, along with around 100 supporters, following prolonged negotiations with demonstrators early Saturday morning on the eve of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC) polls.Reports indicated that Nirmal had been confined in his home since Friday afternoon by a group of opposition supporters. This followed an alleged attack by Tipra Motha cadres, who reportedly vandalised his property. The violence unfolded shortly after BJP state president Rajib Bhattacharjee visited Nirmal to assess poll preparations.According to sources, the conflict initially stemmed from Tipra Motha supporters confronting BJP workers outside Nirmal’s home, questioning Bhattacharjee’s visit. What began as a verbal clash spiralled into violence.Police intervened but the attackers overpowered them, leaving at least eight police personnel injured, including Sepahijala SP Bijoy Debbarma. Reinforcements from Tripura State Rifles and Assam Rifles were dispatched to de-escalate the situation.By around 2am, security forces evacuated Nirmal and his supporters and relocated them to Bishalgarh for their safety.Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma accused BJP supporters of provoking the conflict earlier by targeting members of his party.
