Guwahati: Flood-hit students in Sivasagar district are walking on an arduous road to recovery. To make their transition a little easier, social organisations stepped in to provide them with school essentials.Around 7,000 students affected by floods in the district are set to receive free school uniforms, notebooks, bags, pens and other educational essentials under an initiative led by the RSS-affiliated Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS), Assam, in collaboration with 15 other social organisations.The materials have so far been distributed across more than 100 educational institutions, BKS said in a media release on Saturday.On Friday, the initiative covered four schools. A total of 230 students received uniforms: 120 at Shankardev Shishu Vidya Niketan in Betbari, 40 at Joyrapar Madhya Asomiya Vidyalaya, 30 at Koamra Sandikai Primary School and 40 at Deobil Banuwa Primary School.“On Sept 14, uniforms will be distributed among 120 students at Rajabari Primary School and Joyrapar Janakalyan Primary School,” BKS, Assam, said in the release.“The recent floods have caused extensive damage to the homes, agricultural land and lives of many families in the area. As a result, students’ education has also been disrupted. This initiative, to boost the morale of students and ensure continuity in their education during such a disaster, has received a positive response from the community,” a spokesperson for the organisation said.Teachers at the schools thanked BKS and Seuji Basundhara Multipurpose Cooperative Society for organising the uniform distribution programme.Jagat Shyam Dev, principal acharya of Betbari Shankardev Shishu Vidya Niketan, said, “Such initiatives are extremely important in ensuring continuity in students’ education by providing them with essential materials during times of disaster.”Earlier, with the cooperation of the Kisan Sangh, Seuji Basundhara Multipurpose Cooperative Society had distributed cattle feed, paddy seedlings and other materials to support farmers in flood-affected areas of upper Assam.
