Mohali: A man died after allegedly suffering an electric shock near a streetlight in C-Block of Aerocity on Friday, triggering protests by area residents. The deceased worked as a labourer and is believed to be a native of Bihar. He was between 40 and 42 years of age.Police said the body has been kept in the civil hospital mortuary for 72 hours to facilitate identification by family members or acquaintances. Further legal proceedings will be initiated after statements of relatives of the deceased are recorded.Following the incident, area councillor Harvinder Singh, accompanied by residents, staged a protest at the site, raising slogans against the administration and departments responsible for maintaining streetlights and electrical connections in the area. He said the death was the result of gross negligence by authorities and demanded an impartial inquiry.Residents said exposed electrical wires and faulty fittings near several streetlights in the locality posed a constant threat. Councillor Harvinder Singh said he had repeatedly informed officials about the poor condition of streetlights and electrical connections in Aerocity but no corrective measures had been taken.“If the complaints had been addressed on time, a precious life could have been saved,” the councillor said.The incident has also raised concerns about the condition of electrical infrastructure in public spaces across Aerocity. Residents urged the administration to conduct a comprehensive safety audit of streetlights, electricity poles, and electrical connections across Aerocity. They also called for strict action against officials or employees responsible for negligence.
