Prayagraj: The administration of Motilal Nehru Medical College has suspended all senior residents (SRs) and junior residents (JRs) of the medicine department who were on duty during the alleged assault of an advocate and his driver at SRN Hospital on Thursday evening. The suspended doctors have been attached to the principal’s office pending an inquiry. The action followed allegations that advocate Sarvesh Shukla and his driver, Krishna Kumar Kesarwani, were assaulted and confined to a room at the hospital after they brought a patient for treatment. Kotwali police have registered an FIR, while the college has constituted a three-member inquiry committee headed by medicine department head Dr Manoj Mathur. The panel has been asked to submit its report within two days.Shukla, a resident of Allapur, alleged that 25 to 30 doctors assaulted him and his driver. According to his complaint, they reached SRN Hospital around 7 pm with a patient, Narbahadur. A security guard directed them to Room 2/40 in the trauma centre. He alleged that a doctor wearing a mask and glasses refused to examine the patient. When his driver informed the doctor about the patient’s serious condition, the doctor allegedly used abusive language. Following an argument, 10 to 15 doctors allegedly arrived and assaulted the duo. Around 15 more doctors later joined them, he alleged. The advocate further alleged that he and his driver were dragged into a room and locked inside. Two women doctors were also allegedly part of the group. He claimed they were assaulted with sticks and iron rods and that his gold chain and mobile phone were snatched during the incident.According to Shukla, he regained consciousness after a policeman helped him and gave him water. He later reached Kotwali police station and called his wife. He alleged that when she arrived at the police station, a masked doctor present there kicked him in the stomach in front of police personnel.MLN Medical College principal Dr AK Verma has sought an explanation from Dr Mathur and details of the number of junior residents posted in emergency medicine at the time of the incident.“Any kind of indiscipline in the college will not be tolerated,” Verma said.
