Director Advait Chandan has exited Dharma Productions’ ‘Dostana 2’, starring Vikrant Massey and Lakshya, due to creative differences with the producers. The parting has been amicable. Chandan had spent nearly seven months developing the project before stepping away. The film has had a troubled journey since it was first announced in 2019.

Filmmaker Advait Chandan has parted ways with Dharma Productions’ much-awaited sequel ‘Dostana 2’. The director had been on board to helm the project and had reportedly spent around seven months working on its development before eventually deciding to step away.

As reported by Variety India, the split came down to creative differences; Chandan’s vision for the film failed to match the direction the producers had in mind. The parting, however, has been on good terms, with no bad blood between the two sides beyond a simple difference in creative outlook.

Chandan’s exit is just the latest twist in what has been a long and rocky journey for ‘Dostana 2’, a project that has gone through several reinventions since it was first announced. The sequel to the 2008 blockbuster ‘Dostana’ was initially unveiled in 2019 with Kartik Aaryan, Janhvi Kapoor and Lakshya set to star, and Collin D’Cunha lined up to make his feature directorial debut. However, the project was eventually shelved.

In recent years, Dharma Productions got back to work on a reimagined version of the film. The revived project was said to have Vikrant and Lakshya in leading roles, while former beauty pageant winner Sini Shetty was reportedly being considered for the female lead.

Advait Chandan was later roped in to direct the new version of the film and put in nearly a year of work. His casting as director was widely appreciated within the industry, as he is known for striking a fine balance between mass entertainment and emotional storytelling. ‘Loveyapa’ was his most recent film in the director’s chair, before that, he had helmed the Aamir Khan starrer ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’.
