Jamshedpur: After a four-year wait, the two lakh residents within the Adityapur Municipal Corporation (AMC) area are finally set to receive clean, piped tap water. The Rs 395-crore Adityapur drinking water project is nearing completion, with trials scheduled for next week.Mayor Sanjay Sardar said the Adityapur Municipal Corporation (AMC) would provide water supply to 20,000 houses in Adityapur-II in Phase I, and 30,000 houses in Adityapur-I in Phase II.The trial run aims to check water pressure throughout the pipeline, water quality, and also the time it takes to reach the user from the storage tank, he added.“The trial run will be conducted by the Jharkhand Urban Infrastructure Development Company and the Drinking Water and Sanitation Department in coordination with the AMC,” he said.A 30 MLD water treatment plant at the Sitarampur dam is operational. The treated water will be supplied to four storage tanks for households located in Adityapur-II.A 60 MLD capacity water treatment plant is nearing completion at Sapra, which will supply water to seven storage tanks serving 19,000 houses in Adityapur-1I.Both treatment plants are built along the Kharkai river.Of the 50,000 houses across the municipality’s 32 wards, 8,000 are supplied with tap water by the Drinking Water and Sanitation Department (DWSD). Once completed, the new water project will also connect the 8,000 existing houses.While the command area needs 30 MLD of water daily, the AMC provides 17 MLD.The foundation for the multi-crore water project was laid in Feb 2019, with deadline for March 2022.The Sapra treatment plant project was delayed due to forest clearances.The Feb 2026 municipal polls in Adityapur were dominated by the issue of potable water supply, a perennial problem for local households.
