Nagpur: Actions against traffic violations in Nagpur have dropped by an average of 865 cases a day this year. The traffic department has registered around 2,387 cases daily till July compared to 3,252 a day in the corresponding period of 2025. A sharp decline has been recorded across most major violation categories, while enforcement against drunk driving has seen a rise.The traffic police recorded 11.87 lakh violation cases in 2025, averaging around 3,252 cases a day. In the first seven months of 2026, 5.06 lakh cases were recorded, translating into around 2,387 cases per day — a reduction of nearly 27%, or 865 actions every day.This year, action against parking on roads fell by around 42 cases a day — from 224 daily in 2025 to 182 this year. Triple-seat violations declined by about 20 cases a day, while registration plate violations fell by around 24 cases daily.Signal jumping violations have seen the most striking decline this year. Till July, only 6,633 cases have been recorded, an average of 31 cases a day. Last year, traffic police had fined 48,286 persons for signal jumping, an average of 132 cases a day. This translates to a decrease of an average of 101 cases daily.On the other hand, registration of drunk driving cases has witnessed a two-fold rise. The traffic police recorded 5,968 drunk-driving cases in 2025, or about 16 a day. By July this year, the number had already reached 7,248, taking the daily average to around 34 cases.The decline in fresh enforcement comes as the traffic department has been focusing on recovering pending challans. The police recently recovered around Rs5 crore in pending challans, with officials maintaining that such recoveries act as a deterrent among motorists.DCP (traffic) Aditya Mirkhelkar said collecting pending challans remains a top priority for the department. “However, in the coming days, we will be increasing action against signal jumping and other violations,” he said.
