Mysuru: After nearly 26 years of association with Mysuru Dasara, veteran elephant Abhimanyu on Wednesday took part in the festivities for one final time, marking the end of an era for the jumbo that carried the golden howdah during the Dasara procession from 2020 to 2025.The 60-year-old elephant, who was rested from regular Dasara duties this year, was included in the procession as the Nishane Aane (pilot elephant) following requests from people and organisations in Mysuru. The forest department and state govt agreed to the special request, allowing Abhimanyu to make a final appearance in the procession. As he arrived at the Mysuru Palace premises, hundreds of people cheered for him in recognition of his achievements and also due to love for the tusker. When the foresters decided to rest him, it led to public uproar, leading to a farewell at an event on the fringes of Nagarahole reserve in Aug. But it was not enough as the public demanded his appearance at Dasara, leading the authorities to bring him for his last appearance at Mysuru Dasara.Abhimanyu earned a special place in the hearts of Mysureans for his majestic gait, calm demeanour and ability to carry the golden howdah.Beyond Dasara, Abhimanyu has played a significant role in human-wildlife conflict management. According to forest officials, he has helped capture around 300 wild animals, including nearly 80 man-eating animals. He was often summoned when wild elephants entered villages or inhabited areas and could not be driven back into the forest.
