Chandigarh: A newborn girl found abandoned near the Government Multi-Speciality Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, on Saturday afternoon, succumbed during treatment. Hours earlier, Bunty, an auto-rickshaw driver from Sector 56, heard the sound of a baby crying near Gate No. 1 of GMSH-16. On checking, he found a yellow cement sack with a baby inside, her body smeared with dirt. Bunty immediately alerted the police. The baby was rushed to the children’s emergency ward in GMSH-16. Medical staff said the baby appeared to be one or two days old. Her breathing was weak and irregular. A team from Sector 17 police station visited the hospital but no family member or relative of the child could be traced. The infant died while undergoing treatment, police said.Police have registered a case under Section 93 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against unidentified persons for abandoning the newborn. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage and questioning local vendors and workers to identify those involved.
