Dibrugarh: All Assam Students’ Union (Aasu) members demonstrated in Makum on Friday, demanding repairs to National Highways 37 and 38.Aasu members took out a procession through the town and raised slogans for urgent action from the authorities. Makum Aasu president Deep Das and general secretary Rupjyoti Bhowmik led the protest.The protesters alleged that potholes and damaged road surfaces were inconveniencing commuters and motorists, particularly near the busy Makum junction.“The condition of the highways has been causing serious problems for commuters. Immediate repair and proper maintenance are required to ensure safe and smooth movement of vehicles. Several times in the past, we have submitted a memorandum to the authorities, but no steps have been taken,” Deep Das said.He said the authorities should not delay repairs as the two highways are important links in upper Assam.“Thousands of vehicles use these roads every day. The authorities should take immediate steps to repair the damaged portions and ensure that the roads remain motorable,” he said.Aasu functionaries demanded an inspection of the affected stretches and immediate repair work. They also called for regular maintenance to prevent further deterioration.The student body said the highways’ condition was concerning given the volume of traffic through Makum and urged the authorities to address the issue at the earliest.
