Amritsar/Bathinda/Chandigarh: AAP on Monday protested against three BJP MPs for attending a tribute gathering for 1984 anti-Sikh riots convict Sajjan Kumar, with party functionaries staging demonstrations outside BJP Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Chugh’s residence in Amritsar and the party office in Bathinda.AAP questioned how BJP MPs could honour a person convicted in cases related to the 1984 riots and demanded that the party clarify its position on those responsible for the violence. In Amritsar, MLA Jeevan Jyot Kaur said the participation of the BJP functionaries was “deeply hurtful” to victims’ families, while MLA Ajay Gupta asked whether BJP stood with Sikhs or against them.The protests were over Delhi BJP MPs Ramvir Bidhuri, Yogender Chandolia and Kamaljeet Sehrawat visiting Sajjan Kumar’s family. BJP national president Nitin Nabin later reprimanded the three MPs.Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon called the protests a “Punjab govt-sponsored political stunt” and accused AAP of double standards. He said AAP leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal and Bhagwant Mann, should first answer questions about their association with Congress.BJP Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Chugh also hit back, questioning Kejriwal’s association with Congress leaders facing allegations in connection with the 1984 riots and AAP’s 2024 Lok Sabha alliance with Congress in Delhi.Chugh asked what steps AAP had taken to pursue investigations and legal cases related to the riots after forming the Delhi govt with Congress support in 2013. He said AAP should decide whether it stood with the victims of 1984 or was using their pain to target BJP.
