Jamshedpur: The Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) has launched a special enforcement drive against the use of single-use plastic carry bags and disposable glasses, which liquor outlets in the city use. Civic officials said several liquor outlets hand out banned plastic carry bags and disposable glasses as freebies to woo customers.“We are penalising the environmental norm violators and warning them not to repeat the offence while promoting a green and environmentally friendly city,” said JNAC deputy municipal commissioner (DMC) Krishna Kumar.
The official said a special enforcement drive was launched on Saturday and would continue regularly and randomly to free the city from restricted articles that threaten the environment. Municipal officials have imposed a cumulative penalty of Rs 10,000 on four outlets in the Sakchi market for violating the rules so far.Officials said the manufacture, use, distribution, storage and promotion of single-use plastic were prohibited in the state. “We conducted random inspections at vegetable and fruit shops, as well as hawkers’ stores and roadside eateries, regularly to seize prohibited articles and penalise them. Liquor outlets were targeted for the first time after reports of violations reached the civic body,” the official said.
