Srinagar, Oct 17: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Zone Sujit Kumar Singh on Saturday chaired a conference on SMART Policing and Digital Beat Policing, directing all police stations across the Kashmir Zone to adopt the initiatives as an integral part of their day-to-day functioning.
The conference was attended by Range DIGs, District SSsP, Additional SSsP, Zonal SSsP, DySsP and SHOs from across the Kashmir Zone, a police spokesperson said in a statement issued here.
In line with the directions and vision of the Director General of Police, J&K, the initiative aims to transform police stations into modern, efficient, accountable and citizen-friendly institutions, ensuring better and faster delivery of services to the public.
During the conference, the IGP emphasised the five fundamental principles of SMART Policing: Strict and Sensitive, Modern and Mobile, Alert and Accountable, Reliable and Responsive, and Techno-savvy and Trained. He stressed that the concept should not remain confined to policy documents but must be reflected in the conduct, working culture and public service delivery of every police station.
The IGP directed all SHOs to institutionalise Digital Beat Policing in their jurisdictions, with Beat Officers undertaking regular field visits, maintaining meaningful interaction with local residents and ensuring that policing services reach the last person in the last mile of every beat.
Digital Beat Policing is expected to facilitate public outreach through regular interaction with citizens to address grievances, digital beat records with regular updating of beat-level information on digital platforms, quick public service delivery through prompt, transparent and accessible police services, clear accountability for Beat Officers with monitoring by SHOs and supervisory officers, community participation to strengthen public confidence, and future-ready policing equipped with modern tools, digital capabilities and professional skills.
The IGP observed that the police station is the key point of contact between police and public and must be accessible, responsive and tech-empowered. Supervisory officers were directed to personally monitor implementation and ensure visible results on the ground.
“Our objective is to make every police station in Kashmir Zone SMART and citizen-centric, where technology strengthens accountability and police services reach every citizen with dignity,” the IGP said.
All District Police Heads were directed to ensure effective implementation across the Kashmir Zone, with emphasis on tech-driven service delivery, beat-level engagement and accountability.
Kashmir Zone Police said it remains committed to a modern, responsive and future-ready policing system.
