Handwara, Oct 17: The Qaziabad Volleyball League 2026 began at Government High School Hangha with enthusiasm, bringing together young volleyball players from different areas of North Kashmir.
The tournament is being organised by Indian Army under Operation Sadbhavana, with Army Camp Langate hosting the event. Six teams from different areas, including Langate, Rafiabad and Sopore, are participating in the league.
A cash prize of ₹90,000 will be distributed among the winners at the conclusion of the tournament.
The league aims to provide local youth with a platform to showcase their sporting talent, improve their skills and develop teamwork, discipline and sportsmanship. It also seeks to encourage young people to take part in healthy sporting activities and build stronger connections within their communities.
Players and locals welcomed the initiative, saying that young sportspersons from Jammu & Kashmir are increasingly representing the country at national-level competitions and need more opportunities to prove their abilities.
Shabir Ahmad Wani said such tournaments could play an important role in identifying and nurturing local talent.
“Many talented players in our locality have the potential to compete at higher levels. What they need is a proper platform, regular opportunities and encouragement. Initiatives like the Qaziabad Volleyball League can help young players gain confidence and move towards bigger competitions,” he said.
Bashir Ahmad Wani also appreciated the Army’s efforts to promote sports among local youth, stressing the importance of continued support for emerging players.
“Players from Jammu & Kashmir are representing India at the national level. This shows the talent we have in our region. Youngsters need tournaments like these to improve their game, gain experience and prepare for future opportunities,” he said.
The organisers said the initiative reflects the Indian Army’s efforts to encourage youth participation in sports and strengthen ties with local communities.
The league is also expected to promote unity, harmony and mutual trust through sporting competition, while providing young players with an opportunity to learn, compete and develop their abilities.
