Hyderabad: A neurosurgeon was charred to death inside his car after the vehicle veered off the road, rammed into the service road barrier and burst into flames on the Hyderabad-Khammam national highway in Suryapet early on Sunday. Police suspect that the doctor may have dozed off.Dr K Jagadeesh Babu (50), who worked at a private hospital in Khammam, was on his way to Hyderabad where his family lives. The accident occurred around 7.15am near the Pillalamarri flyover. The impact was so severe that the vehicle was engulfed in flames and completely gutted within minutes, leaving him no time to escape, police said.“We suspect that the driver was sleep-deprived and dozed off. He was completely burnt in the accident,” said G Rajashekar, circle inspector, Khammam (rural).“But we are examining the circumstances that led to the crash and are collecting CCTV footage from toll plazas along the Khammam-Hyderabad route. We are also checking whether there was any technical problem with the car. The exact cause of the crash will be established after the investigation,” the CI said.Police said the vehicle had been reduced to a burnt-out shell by the time they reached the spot after being alerted by locals.“Since the body was charred, we initially had a problem establishing the victim’s identity,” said a cop.Subsequently, police identified him as Dr Jagadeesh, head of the neurosurgery department at a private medical college and hospital in Khammam. He had been working at the hospital for around two decades. Police shifted the body to Suryapet Government General Hospital for postmortem before handing it over to his family.A road accident case was registered under Section 106(1) of the BNS.
