Patna: Six police personnel, including Jhajha SHO Mintu Kumar Singh, sustained injuries after a group of youths allegedly pelted stones at policemen during a Ganesh idol immersion procession near the police station gate in Jamui district late on Friday night.The incident occurred around 11.30pm when a procession from Sohjana village was passing the police station on its way to immerse a Ganesh idol in a pond. According to police, a DJ system was being played at high volume during the procession.Trouble began when police personnel objected to the alleged use of obscene songs and excessive noise near the police station gate. Officers asked the youths to stop the music and lower the volume, following which an argument broke out. Police alleged that some of the youths then started pelting stones at the personnel on duty.The sudden attack triggered panic among people gathered near the police station and within the premises. SHO Mintu Kumar Singh, sub-inspectors Deepak Kumar and Amarjeet Kumar, constables Amit Kumar and Nitesh Kumar Jha, and woman constable Priyanka Kumari sustained injuries in the incident. All the injured personnel were taken to the Jhajha Community Health Centre, where they received treatment.Police said five people were arrested from the spot following the violence. An FIR has been lodged against 17 named accused, and further action is underway.Speaking to this newspaper on Saturday, the SHO alleged that the procession was being carried out without the required licence. He said police intervention led to the confrontation, following which stones were allegedly hurled at the personnel.Jhajha SDPO Vikas Keshav confirmed the incident and said police had received information about stone-pelting during the immersion procession near the station gate. He added that the DJ equipment used during the procession was confiscated. “Police are investigating the involvement of others and efforts are on to identify those responsible,” he added.
