AHMEDABAD: Heavy rains lashed several parts of Gujarat on Friday, inundating roads and underpasses and disrupting normal life in Ahmedabad.Heavy rains were also expected on Saturday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.“Very heavy rainfall occurred at isolated places in Sabarkantha district of North Gujarat and Morbi district of Saurashtra,” the IMD said in a release issued at 6 pm.Isolated places in Aravalli, Banaskantha, Patan, Mehsana and Gandhinagar districts of North Gujarat, and Morbi and Devbhumi Dwarka districts of Saurashtra witnessed downpour, it said.According to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), Meghraj taluka in Aravalli recorded 78 mm rainfall, followed by Ahmedabad city with 73 mm between 6 am and 2 pm.Sabarkantha’s Talod recorded 64 mm rainfall, while Narmada’s Dediapada and Aravalli’s Modasa received 60 mm rain each during the period.In Ahmedabad city, over 200 places were inundated, prompting the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) to deploy pumps to drain out water from several areas.“Over 200 complaints of waterlogging were received on Friday morning. Municipal staff reached the spots to clear the water. All waterlogged roads and underpasses were cleared by 7 pm,” Mayor Hitesh Barot told PTI.Social media visuals showed flooded roads and fields in Aravalli district.In the 24 hours ending at 5 pm on Friday, Morbi district’s Maliya recorded the highest rainfall at 131 mm, followed by Danta taluka in Banaskantha with 91 mm.Shankheshwar taluka in Patan received 85 mm, Dwarka in Devbhumi Dwarka 71 mm and Becharaji in Mehsana 65 mm rain during the period.“Light thunderstorm with lightning and surface wind 30-40 kmph accompanied with light to moderate rain very likely at isolated places in the districts of North Gujarat region namely Panchmahal, Dahod and Mahisagar; in all the districts of South Gujarat region namely Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, Narmada, Bharuch, Surat, Tapi, Dang, Navsari, Valsad and in Daman, Dadra and Nagar Haveli on Saturday until 8.30 am on Sunday,” the official release stated.
