Rajkot Two engineers of the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) have been suspended after serious lapses were detected in the widening work on three bridges on the 150-Foot Second Ring Road.Municipal commissioner Tushar Sumera inspected the ongoing projects on Sept 7 and reviewed their progress, quality of work, manpower deployment, site monitoring and adherence to deadlines.During the inspection, deficiencies were observed in the work carried out on bridges . The project management unit (PMU) was subsequently directed to conduct a survey of the projects.According to the PMU report, several errors and shortcomings were found in the execution of the work. The report also pointed to a clear lack of workmanship and serious negligence in supervision and monitoring.The RMC treats lack of workmanship as serious negligence. In bridge construction, workmanship refers to physical execution of building, repairing or widening the bridge and lack of workmanship means the bridge failed to meet required technical specifications and engineering standards. It also means that workers and contractors executed the bridge’s design carelessly or poorly.“Acting on the findings, RMC suspended Vijay Kariya, deputy executive engineer (civil), and Vishal Vagadiya, assistant engineer (civil), with immediate effect. The two officials were responsible for supervising and monitoring the widening work on the three bridges in Ward 9,“ the RMC said in a statement.The RMC also stated that: “The civic body also issued show-cause notices to West Zone deputy municipal commissioner Chetan Nandani and city engineer Kuntesh Mehta.”Sumera directed officials to ensure that quality standards are maintained and all ongoing projects are completed within the stipulated time.
