Prayagraj: Farmers, traders and industries in parts of Uttar Pradesh are set to get faster and cheaper rail freight options as North Central Railway (NCR) develops modern goods sheds at Phaphund in Auraiya and Ekdil in Etawah. The two projects are expected to ease pressure on existing freight facilities, reduce dependence on road transport and strengthen the logistics network in the region.According to chief public relations officer (CPRO), NCR, Dr Shivam Sharma, a modern goods shed is being developed at Phaphund station under the ‘One District-One Goods Shed’ scheme at an estimated cost of Rs 30 crore. The facility is targeted for completion by Jan 2027. At present, there is no major goods shed between Etawah and Panki Dham in Kanpur, causing difficulties for local traders and industries in transporting goods. The new facility is expected to help Phaphund emerge as an important logistics hub.The Phaphund project will include a 700-metre-long rail-level goods wharf, covered shed, merchant room, workers’ facilities, drinking water, toilets, RCC approach road, high-mast lighting and CCTV surveillance. Around 3.3 hectares of land in Lakhanapur and Kenjari villages has been acquired for the project.At Ekdil station, NCR’s Gati Shakti unit is developing another modern goods shed at a cost of Rs 30.19 crore. Around 4.3 hectares of land in Ritaur and Sheikhupur Jakhauli villages has been acquired for the project. It will have a 700-metre-long and 20-metre-wide heavy-duty rail-level goods platform/wharf, RCC approach road and a 50-metre by 10-metre goods building. Its commissioning in the current financial year is targeted.Dr Sharma said the Ekdil facility would reduce operational pressure at the Etawah goods shed and improve freight movement. Wheat, maize, fertilisers, seeds, cement and other essential commodities are expected to benefit from improved rail freight facilities.Construction at both sites has been temporarily affected by heavy rain and is expected to gain pace once weather conditions improve.
