Guwahati: Assam will rejuvenate 71 traditional water bodies or beels across 23 districts under Rs 796 crore project supported by Asian Development Bank and aimed at boosting fish production and creating sustainable livelihoods for fishing communities.State finance minister minister Jayanta Mallabaruah highlighted the initiative, Project SWIFT ( Sustainable Wetlands and Integrated Fisheries Transformation), in a post on X, saying the project will cover around 4,000 hectares of water bodies.“The initiative aims to significantly boost fish production, with a target of producing 6,000 metric tonnes of fish and around 570 million fish fry annually,” the minister wrote.He added that as part of the livelihood component, 302 boats and fishing nets will be distributed among beneficiaries and around 1,000 youths will receive grants of Rs 50,000 each to pursue livelihood opportunities linked to the fisheries sector.The project will also establish 30 fish-feed units and 100 fish-processing units for self-help groups, creating local opportunities for value addition and employment.The beels, which have traditionally supported fishing, agriculture and other rural livelihoods, have faced degradation and declining productivity over the years.“For generations, Assam’s beels have been closely connected to the lives, livelihoods and culture of local communities. Through Project SWIFT, these vital water bodies are set to receive renewed attention — combining ecological restoration with economic opportunities,” the minister stated,He added, “By restoring its beels, Assam is not only protecting a precious natural asset but also creating a stronger future for fishing communities and sustainable livelihoods across the state.”
