Dibrugarh: Minister Sushanta Borgohain on Friday inspected the erosion-hit Saraguri Chapori in Sivasagar and Bhogdoi embankments in Jorhat.Borgohain reviewed the Brahmaputra erosion in Sivasagar, which has raised concerns over the safety of large areas and threatens the historic Ajan Pir Dargah.The minister said the department deployed geo-bags and took other temporary measures. A permanent solution would be implemented through an 11-km project estimated to cost Rs 205 crore.“The erosion has the potential to affect extensive areas of Sivasagar and places such as the Ajan Pir Dargah. Very soon, permanent measures will be taken to control the erosion through implementation of an 11-kilometre project,” the minister added.Borgohain inspected breached sections of the Bhogdoi embankment at Pohumara and Shalmara. The embankment breached at five locations following heavy rainfall in Nagaland, flooding areas and affecting many people.“Recently, heavy rainfall in Nagaland caused the embankment of the Bhogdoi river in our Jorhat district to breach at five locations, flooding extensive areas and affecting many people. The water resources department promptly launched temporary restoration works using geo-tubes to strengthen and plug the affected portions,” Borgohain said.He reviewed the emergency works and said repairs at the two locations were complete. He also announced the embankments would be permanently reconstructed.“I am pleased to inform you that the embankments of the Bhogdoi river will be permanently reconstructed very soon, ensuring they pose no threat to the public in the days ahead,” Borgohain added.
